Can You Add Blind Spot Detection to a Truck or Bus? A Retrofit Guide
Blind Spot Detection Guide
Yes, blind spot detection (BSD) can be added to a truck or bus that is already in service. Aftermarket BSD comes as a camera, a radar or a recorder with BSD built in. What fits depends on the vehicle, the blind zones that matter on your routes and what you want the driver to see or hear.

Retrofit or factory fit?
| Aspect | Factory-fitted BSD | Retrofit BSD |
|---|---|---|
| Who installs it | Vehicle maker | Fleet workshop or installer |
| Vehicles covered | New vehicles that include the option | Vehicles you already run |
| Alert and display | Part of the vehicle design | Chosen and positioned by you |
| Rules | Type-approval rules such as UN R151 apply to new vehicle types | These rules are not automatically met by an aftermarket device. See our regulations guide |
A retrofit unit is a warning aid. It does not replace mirrors, the driver's checks or safe working procedures.
Retrofit options
| Option | How it detects | AlwayCare example and listed parameters |
|---|---|---|
| AI camera BSD | Camera with AI detection of pedestrians and cyclists beside the vehicle | CC1002-BSD and CC1003-AHD20: 1080P, IR night vision, IP69K, DC 12V ±6%, -20°C to +70°C |
| Radar BSD | 77GHz radar sensors that track objects in the side zone | R360: 4 radar sensors, 110° azimuth, pedestrians 0.2–40m and vehicles up to 100m, CAN bus, RS485 and 4-channel trigger I/O, IP67 sensors |
| Camera with starlight night vision | AI blind spot camera with external sound and light warning support | CC1004-BSD: 1080p, 12V |
| Recorder with BSD | MDVR that records video and runs the BSD function | MR910-BSD: 4-channel 1080p MDVR, 12/24V, GPS/Beidou, optional 4G or Wi-Fi; C1005-BSD: 6-channel monitor with BSD and DMS alerts, 8–36V |

Retrofit checklist
- List the vehicle types and which side or sides need cover. A right-hand blind zone matters most on many left-hand-drive routes. Check your own market.
- Map the blind zone with a person or marker at the side of the vehicle and note what the mirrors do not show.
- Check the power supply against the unit: for example DC 12V for the CC1002-BSD and 12/24V for the MR910-BSD.
- Choose camera or radar. Camera BSD can tell a person from a car. Radar works by distance and speed. Confirm the target types on the datasheet.
- Plan where the warning will appear: a monitor, a sound or a light the driver notices.
- Decide whether the alert stays local or is shared with an MDVR, a DMS or a platform.
- Fit, then test with real vehicles, people and cyclists, in daylight and at night, before you roll out.

What a retrofit BSD does not do
- It does not steer or brake the vehicle.
- It does not remove the need for mirrors and driver checks.
- Heavy rain, dirt on the lens and poor mounting can limit what it detects.
- Camera and radar cover different things. Neither covers every blind zone on a long vehicle.

Questions fleets ask about adding blind spot detection
Can I add blind spot detection to a car, truck or bus I already own?
Yes. Aftermarket BSD is available as a camera, a radar or a recorder with BSD built in. Confirm the power supply, mounting position and the target types on the product page.
Does retrofit BSD meet UN R151?
Not automatically. UN R151 is a type-approval regulation for new vehicle types. A retrofit unit is a warning aid. Check the rule for your market and vehicle and ask the supplier for the documents they can provide.
Camera BSD or radar BSD?
Camera BSD with AI can separate people and cyclists from other objects. Radar BSD works by distance and is less affected by light. Many fleets choose by the targets that matter on their routes. Test both if you are unsure.
How many units does one vehicle need?
It depends on the vehicle length and the blind zones you map. A single side unit may not cover a long vehicle. Ask for an installation plan for your vehicle type.
How do I try it first?
Request a sample for a pilot vehicle and test it on your own routes before a bulk order.
Summary
- BSD can be retrofitted as a camera, a radar or a recorder with BSD.
- Map the blind zone first, then choose the unit.
- A retrofit unit is a warning aid, not a type approval.
- Test on your own vehicles before you buy in bulk.
