Fleet Telematics Guide

Telematics is the use of devices in a vehicle to collect data and send it to a platform where a fleet can use it. The word joins telecommunications and informatics. In fleets it usually means vehicle location and events, and often video and driver alerts as well. This guide explains what is collected, how it moves and what to ask before you buy.

A telematics platform turns device data into locations, events and reports.

What data does fleet telematics collect?

DataWhere it comes fromWhat fleets use it for
Location and routeGPS or BeiDou receiver in the deviceLive position, trip history, geofences
Speed, ignition and stop timeDevice and vehicle inputsSpeed review, idle and working-hour checks
Device alertsPower loss, SOS, overspeed and similar triggers on the trackerAlarm handling and follow-up
Vehicle dataCAN bus or serial interface, where supportedExtra signals from the vehicle
Video clipsMDVR or AI dashcamContext for an event
Driver alertsDMS or ADAS function on a supported deviceReview and coaching

What a device can send depends on the model, firmware and the interface to the vehicle. Confirm the exact fields for the device you plan to use.

How the data moves

  1. The device reads its sensors and the vehicle inputs.
  2. It sends data over a mobile network such as 4G, or over Wi-Fi at a depot.
  3. A platform stores the data and shows it as maps, events and reports.
  4. People in the fleet review it, set alert rules and take action.

For tracking in more detail, read GPS Fleet Tracking Systems. For video, read Video Telematics for Remote Fleet Oversight.

What to ask before you buy

  • Which fields does the device send, and how often?
  • Does the platform show those fields, or only a part of them?
  • Is there an API or protocol, and who owns the integration?
  • Where is the data stored, for how long and who can see it?
  • What happens to the data if the network drops?
  • Can the device be fitted to your vehicle types and power supply?
  • How are drivers told what is recorded?

Drivers have privacy rights in many countries. Tell them what is collected and set clear access rules. See Fleet Data Silos for how data is shared across systems.

Questions fleets ask about telematics

What is telematics?

Telematics is the use of in-vehicle devices to collect data such as location, speed and events and send it to a platform. Fleets use it to see where vehicles are, review trips and handle alerts.

What is the difference between GPS tracking and telematics?

GPS tracking shows where a vehicle is. Telematics also covers events and alerts and, where supported, vehicle data. Many fleets use the terms for the same system.

Does telematics include video?

It can. Video telematics adds clips from an MDVR or AI dashcam linked to events. Not every telematics system includes video.

Do I need a mobile network for telematics?

Most live systems use a 4G network. Some devices store data and send it over Wi-Fi when they reach a depot. Confirm what your device supports.

Is telematics data personal data?

It can be, because it relates to a driver. Check the privacy and employment rules in your market and tell drivers what is collected.

Summary

  • Telematics sends vehicle data from a device to a platform.
  • Location is the base. Events, vehicle data and video can be added.
  • Ask which fields are sent and shown before you choose a device.
  • Tell drivers what is collected and who can see it.
