Lane Departure Warning for Fleets: How It Works and What It Does Not Do

ADAS Guide

Lane departure warning (LDW) alerts the driver when the vehicle drifts out of its lane. It is a warning only: it does not steer, brake or correct the vehicle. This guide explains how LDW works on a fleet vehicle, what it cannot do and what to check before you fit it.

How lane departure warning works

An ADAS unit watches the road ahead and the lane markings. When the vehicle drifts toward or over a lane line, the unit gives a warning to the driver. The form of the alert depends on the model, so confirm it on the product page.

LDW is one of several ADAS warnings. Forward-collision, pedestrian and headway warnings come from the same kind of unit and are covered in our ADAS selection guide.

What lane departure warning does not do

  • It does not steer or brake. The driver stays in control.
  • It does not detect fatigue by itself. Driver fatigue and distraction need a driver monitoring system (DMS).
  • Lane markings that are worn, covered or missing can limit any lane-based warning.

Where lane departure warning is available

ADAS functions differ by model. Check the exact warnings on each product page before you order.

What to check before you buy

  1. Power supply: the AWS302 takes 12/24V, so it suits most trucks and buses.
  2. Mounting: choose a windshield position that keeps the driver sightline clear.
  3. Recording: the AWS302 records 1280x720 video to a TF card of up to 256GB.
  4. Connectivity: 4G or Wi-Fi and GPS/BeiDou positioning are available, with optional I/O or RS232.
  5. Pilot: test on your own routes, at night and in rain, and record the results.

Questions fleets ask about lane departure warning

Does LDW replace driver monitoring?

No. LDW warns about lane drift. A DMS watches the driver for fatigue and distraction. Many fleets use both; see our anti-fatigue solution.

Will the system brake the vehicle?

No. AlwayCare ADAS units alert the driver. They do not brake or steer.

Can LDW be fitted to a vehicle that is already in service?

AlwayCare ADAS units are retrofit products listed as suitable for all vehicles with 12/24V power. Confirm the fitting plan for your vehicle in your quotation.

How do I try it first?

Sample units are available for road testing before a bulk order. Send your vehicle types through the inquiry form.

Key point to remember

Lane departure warning tells the driver the vehicle is drifting. It does not control the vehicle. Choose the ADAS functions you need, confirm them on the product page and test the unit on your own routes. See the AWS302 ADAS unit, the ADAS range or send an inquiry with your vehicle type.
