Forward Collision Warning System for Trucks: Functions, Limits and Fitting
ADAS Guide
A forward collision warning (FCW) system warns the driver when the gap to the vehicle ahead closes too fast. It alerts the driver. It does not brake the vehicle. This guide explains how FCW works on a truck, what it cannot do and how to choose and fit a unit.

How a forward collision warning system works
An ADAS unit monitors the road ahead. When the gap to the vehicle in front closes too fast, it warns the driver so there is time to react. The AWS302 also gives pedestrian, lane-departure and following-distance (headway) warnings from the same unit.
FCW is one function in an ADAS package. Our truck ADAS and blind spot detection guide shows how it fits with blind spot detection.
What a forward collision warning does not do
- It is not automatic emergency braking. It alerts the driver and does not act on the vehicle.
- It does not replace a safe following distance or the driver's attention.
- Heavy rain, glare or dirt on the windshield can limit any forward-looking warning.

Choose the right unit
| Option | What it is | Example models |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone ADAS | Standalone unit with collision, pedestrian and lane-departure warnings; 12/24V | AWS302 |
| ADAS with a mobile DVR | ADAS function combined with a 5-channel mobile DVR | MR910-A, MR910-BP |
| ADAS with DMS in an AI dashcam | ADAS and driver monitoring in one dashcam | MR700 (1080p), MR750 (2K, 5-channel) |
| DMS with ADAS and BSD | All-in-one unit with driver alerts, 1080p recording and optional ADAS and BSD | MR830 |
ADAS functions differ by model. Check the exact warnings on each product page.

Fitting checklist
- Confirm the power supply: the AWS302 takes 12/24V.
- Pick a windshield position with a clear view of the road ahead and a clear driver sightline.
- Ask for the installation topology for your vehicle type.
- Test the warnings at low speed in a safe area and record the results.
- Run a pilot on your own routes, at night and in rain, before you order in bulk.
Questions fleets ask about forward collision warning
Is forward collision warning the same as automatic emergency braking?
No. A forward collision warning gives an alert. Automatic emergency braking acts on the vehicle. AlwayCare ADAS units alert the driver only.
Can I add FCW to a truck that is already in service?
AlwayCare ADAS units are retrofit products listed as suitable for all vehicles with 12/24V power. Your quotation confirms the fitting plan for your vehicle.
Can I combine FCW with driver monitoring?
Yes. The MR700 and MR750 dashcams combine ADAS with driver monitoring, and the MR830 adds optional BSD. See our anti-fatigue solution.
How do I try it first?
Sample units are available for road testing before a bulk order. Send your vehicle types through the inquiry form.
Key point to remember
A forward collision warning tells the driver the gap is closing. It does not brake the vehicle. Choose the ADAS functions you need, confirm them on the product page and test on your own routes. See the AWS302 ADAS unit, the ADAS range or send an inquiry with your vehicle type.
