India moved its main ADAS dates for medium and heavy vehicles to 2027 and 2028. The current plan covers M2, M3, N2 and N3 vehicle groups. It does not say that every vehicle already on the road must be changed now.
The short answer
Updates from February 2026 put key braking and stability rules in October 2027. Driver attention, lane, blind spot and moving-off systems follow in January 2028. Before buying, check the vehicle group, model status and latest rule.
Which vehicles are covered?
The rule names four vehicle groups: M2, M3, N2 and N3. M groups carry passengers. N groups carry goods. The number shows a size or weight group.
This means the rule is not a simple order for every van, car, truck and bus. A fleet should confirm the official group shown for each vehicle.
Which systems are on the current schedule?
- Vehicle Stability Function: can help the vehicle stay stable when control is at risk.
- Advanced Emergency Braking: can warn and brake in some forward-crash events.
- Lane Departure Warning: warns when the vehicle leaves a lane in covered conditions.
- Driver Drowsiness and Attention Warning: checks for signs linked to low driver attention.
- Blind Spot Information: gives information about road users in a defined blind area.
- Moving Off Information: helps with road users near the vehicle when it starts moving.
Each function has its own Indian standard. A product with one warning feature is not proof that the whole vehicle meets every rule.
What are the latest dates?
1 October 2027
The current notice puts key braking and stability rules on this date. It also uses this date for new models in the wider ADAS plan.
1 January 2028
The current notice puts driver, lane, blind spot and moving-off rules on this date. It also uses this date for existing models in the wider ADAS plan.
These dates replaced the earlier 2026 plan. They do not mean that every older fleet vehicle must be changed now.
How should a fleet prepare?
List the vehicles
Record the model, vehicle group, build date and normal use.
Check the rule
Match each vehicle with the current government notice and Indian standard.
Ask for proof
Request test documents for the exact vehicle and system, not only a sales brochure.
Test the warnings
Check camera position, road markings, traffic mix, weather and driver response.
Train the driver
Explain every alert and what the driver should do. ADAS does not replace safe driving.
