ADAS Buyer Checklist

A forward collision warning (FCW) system warns the driver when the gap to the vehicle ahead is closing. It does not brake or steer the truck. Suppliers describe their systems in different ways, so use the same questions for each. For the functions and limits, read Forward Collision Warning System for Trucks: Functions, Limits and Fitting.

In-cab ADAS unit and display on the windshield of a commercial vehicle
An ADAS unit sits behind the windshield and warns the driver. It is not an automatic braking system.

1. What warnings are included

WarningWhat to ask
Forward collisionAt what range and speed does the warning start, and can the threshold be set?
Headway or following distanceIs there a warning for a short gap even without a closing speed?
Lane departureIs it included, and does it work without a turn signal?
PedestrianIs it included, and for which conditions?

2. How the driver is warned

  • A sound, a voice message, a light or a screen image: which is used?
  • Can the volume and the language be set?
  • Does the alert stay clear in a loud cab?
  • Can the system be muted, and who decides that policy?

3. Mounting and calibration

  • Where does the camera sit on the windshield, and does it block the view?
  • What vehicle details does calibration need, such as camera height and distance to the front?
  • How long does fitting and calibration take per vehicle?
  • What happens after a windshield change?

4. Recording and platform

  • Are alerts saved as events, with video before and after?
  • Are events sent to a platform, and which fields are shown?
  • How long is video kept, and who can view it?

5. Testing and acceptance

  1. Fit the system on two or three vehicles with different duty.
  2. Drive a planned route and note each warning and what caused it.
  3. Count missed warnings and unnecessary warnings with the supplier.
  4. Agree the pass mark before the fleet order.

Questions buyers ask about FCW systems

Does a forward collision warning system brake the truck?

No. An aftermarket FCW system warns the driver. Braking stays with the driver.

Can I fit it to an older truck?

Yes, with an aftermarket ADAS unit. Check the supply voltage and the windshield position.

How do I check the system works before ordering for the whole fleet?

Run a pilot on a few vehicles and compare missed and unnecessary warnings with the supplier.

Do I need to recalibrate after a windshield change?

Usually yes, because the camera position changes.

Can the same unit monitor the driver?

Some models combine ADAS with driver monitoring. Check the exact model.
