Forward Collision Warning Light: What It Means and What Drivers Should Do
ADAS Basics
A forward collision warning (FCW) light tells the driver that the system sees a closing gap to the vehicle ahead, or that the system itself needs attention. The symbol, colour and sound differ by vehicle maker, so the owner's manual is the final guide. This article explains the common cases and what a driver should do.

Common meanings of an FCW light
| What the driver sees | Usual meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Light flashes with a sound or a message | The system sees a closing gap to the vehicle ahead | Ease off the throttle, check the road and brake if needed |
| Light comes on briefly at start-up | Normal system check when the ignition is switched on | No action if it goes out |
| Light stays on | The system may be switched off or have a fault | Check the setting, then report it for inspection if it stays on |
| Light on after rain, snow or mud | The sensor or camera may be covered | Clean the sensor area if it is safe to do so |
| Light on after a windshield change or a bump | The camera or radar may need alignment | Have the system checked by a workshop |
Symbols and meanings are set by the vehicle maker. Always follow the manual for your truck.
What the driver should do on a warning
- Look ahead and check the gap to the vehicle in front.
- Reduce speed. Do not wait for the system to brake.
- Increase the following distance after the warning.
- Report repeated warnings to the fleet. They can point to tailgating habits or a sensor problem.
Common causes of a false or repeated warning
- A dirty or covered sensor, camera or windshield area.
- Heavy spray, fog or low sun in front of the camera.
- A tight following distance that the driver sees as normal.
- A camera that has moved after a windshield replacement.
Where aftermarket ADAS fits
Many trucks and buses have no factory system. A retrofit ADAS camera can give a forward collision alert to the driver. It only warns. It does not brake or steer, and its alerts depend on the mounting, settings and conditions. Our guide Forward Collision Warning System for Trucks explains the functions and the limits. AlwayCare dashcams such as the MR700 and MR750 combine ADAS and driver monitoring options.

Questions drivers and fleets ask about FCW lights
What does the forward collision warning light mean?
It usually means the system sees a closing gap to the vehicle ahead, or that the system needs attention. The exact meaning depends on the vehicle maker.
Why is my FCW light on all the time?
The system may be switched off, the sensor may be covered or the system may have a fault. Check the setting and clean the sensor area, then report it if the light stays on.
Will the truck brake by itself when the light comes on?
That depends on the vehicle. A warning light alone does not mean automatic braking. Never rely on it to brake for you.
Can I turn the system off?
Some vehicles allow it. Fleet policy and local rules decide whether it is allowed.
Can I add a forward collision warning to an older truck?
Yes, with an aftermarket ADAS device. It warns the driver but does not brake or steer.
